Switched to IE 8. Took 3 times as long to start and ran sluggishly. Could not
get Google as my default search engine. Every time I opened the browser I got
the same error message asking me which search engine I prefered ?? Other
minor glitches (like screen freezes) made me wonder what the fuss is all
about. When it was working it wasn't any better than IE 7. I'll try it
again in a few months. Hopefully it will be debugged.

Nothing to debug here: IE 8 works perfectly for me.

Before you try to install IE 8, you need to do some preparation. Search
the web with this as your search term...

how to install internet explorer 8

....and you'll find plenty of valuable advice.

Keep in mind that Internet Explorer is part of the Windows operating
system: When you upgrade to IE 8 you are upgrading Windows. All the
usual preparations for an OS upgrade apply here as well.

Next time, and if you aren't willing to troubleshoot the problems then,
don't bother posting another useless rant. Just revert and be pacified.
