tried SP1 update but pc froze!

hello,
my xp has been giving me trouble lately, freezing now and
then, being quite slow....i hadnt done any updates in a
while so i did today, but as i was in the process of
installing SP1, lo and behold, it froze and i had to
restart, except windows wont even open now...just a flash
on the screen and then reboots automatically.
what can i do to just restore windows?
i assume i will have to reinstall xp from scratch....but i
am also running linux (with a dual boot), can i reinstall
without affecting that?

In the future do not install an update while other issues are present
unless the update is designed to fix that specific issue.

Reboot tapping F8 each second.
Select "Last known good configuration"
Otherwise...
Reboot tapping F8 again.
Select Safe Mode at the menu.
Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore
Select Date/Time before issue started
Or...
Perform a Repair Installation:

thank you for your advice, but unfortunately the same thing
happened...pc continuously restarted. i reinstalled
windows and thought i might try again. right, if i start
from scratch there should be no problem. i installed the
sp1 and it finished this time, but when i restarted the
same exact thing happened. just a flash on the screen and
restart. i guess it was not meant to be....off to
reinstall again!

run a system recovery and see if that fixes it! It's a pain but it works!
