Trouble with Automatic Updates and downloading updates in general

The icon in my systems tray tells me that Automatic Updates is turned off,
but the settings at my Control Panel indicate it's on.

Then, when I attempt to download updates manually from the Windows Update
page, an error message appears which reads:

[Error number: 0x80070424]
Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the requested
page. You may find the following resources helpful in resolving the problem:
For self-help options:

Windows Update Response Center

Windows Update Troubleshooter

Windows Update Newsgroups
For assisted support options:

Microsoft Online Assisted Support (no-cost for Windows Update issues)

What should I do? How do I correct this problem?

I am having the same problem. Did you download XP SP2? If you did, I think
that is where the problem started. I hope someone can help us.

Your computer may be infected with Trojan.Win32.Boxed. The variant that
infected my computer was Trojan.Win32.Boxed.27718.B. The site
http://www.globalhauri.com/ has details about how to fix it. If you want to
make a quick check of whether or not your computer is infected, click Start,
Run, and type in the following: "services.msc" (don't type the quote marks).
Then scroll down to see if there is a Network Client service listed. If so,
your computer has been infected with the trojan, as Network Client is not a
valid service. Go to the site I mentioned above, and follow their
instructions for repairing your computer.

Thank you, Dennis!!!

I'd called everyone to help me, but to no avail. I couldn't wait any
longer, so I wound up simply doing a "system restore" which removed the
problem.

Should it happen again, I'll find this post again! Thanks so much!
