Trouble with download/installation of updates for Windows ME

Boy, do I need help!

I've been trying to help out an aunt with her computer. However, it appears
she has not been successful in downloading recent Microsoft updates. When I
ran her updater, it stated she required critical updates of:
1. Cumulative Security Updater Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (KB896688)
2. Security Update for Direct X 9 (KB904706)
3. Microsoft .NET Framework 1.0 Service Pack 3, English Version
4. Critical Update for Windows Media Player Script Commands (KB828026)
Whenever I try to download these on her machine, the machine locks up before
hardly getting 1/3 through. I thought I would try finding them on my
computer at home, but can't locate the necessary downloads for the ME system
(I did all kinds of searches on the download site and ME site). Also, the
windows update website keeps wanting to scan my own machine (which is Windows
98SE and up to date in updates).

Is there a clear and simple way to find the correct updates and download
them on MY computer so that I can then burn them on a CD and try installing
them on hers that way?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated, as I don't want her to get
further and further behind in critical updates. THANKS!

Try the Catalog
You can download them from the Catalog and save to be installed later.
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...en/default.asp

Click Add button for each update you want to download. Once you have what you want,
Click the “Go To Download Basket” link. Type in or browse to the location where you
want the updates saved to and then Click the “Download Now” button.
Once downloaded, you can then burn them to CD.

How to download updates and drivers from the Windows Update Catalog or from the
Microsoft Update Catalog
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/323166

It will check your system then the catalog will come up - select Windows Me (I have
XP and had not trouble looking for Win Me updates).
I think I saw this one in the 59 critical updates
Security Update for Direct X 9 (KB904706)

Thanks for your earlier advice, TaurArian I went to the catalogue,
downloaded the required critical updates and burned them on CD. All seemed
to be working well in downloads and installation until the .NET Framework 1.0
Serice Pack 3, Englis Version (9.6 MB). Download was fine, but during
installation I get Error Message 1706 saying no valid source could be found
for product and asking for the netfx.msi file. I can't find this file on my
Aunt's computer. I've also tried installing in Safe Mode, but that didn't
help either.

This is the only critical update left to get her back on course. Any
thoughts how I can get this installation to work?

Thanks!

Some suggestions/thoughts -

Installation of .NET Framework service packs is not completed if you first install
security update MS05-004
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/899619/
When you install Microsoft .NET Framework service packs on computers that have the
..NET Framework 1.0 or the .NET Framework 1.1 installed, you receive one of the
following error messages:

How to troubleshoot Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 installation issues
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;824643

if required
Microsoft .NET Framework Version 1.1 Redistributable Package
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Then download:
Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Hello TaurArian! Thank you for stickin' by me while I try and sort this out.

I read the article at:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;824643

However, I didn't see where it would apply to Windows ME. It refers to
Windows 2000 and XP.

I see that this version of the Redistributable Package you mentioned is good
for Windows ME.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
as is the Framework 1.1 SP at:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

My aunt's computer has .NET Framework (English) v1.0.3705. Should I just
proceed with the last two installations you mention?

Thanks again for your help on this, TaurArian!

Been awhile since I've used WinMe.

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=908907
You may receive a "Setup Failed" error message or an "Error 1706" error message when
you try to install the .NET Framework 1.0 SP3

Hopefully the above helps you out.

Hi Blokhed, Glad I have been able to build up your confidence.
The CD you need is a blank CD for a CD Burner.
If you have a CD/DVD burner, you will be able to burn to CD/DVD. Definately ask your
sister for some advice.
Keep reading the Newsgroups and you'll pick up quite a few tips from those who
contribute.

PS, please don't use all caps on the Newsgroup or abbreviated words, it's a bit hard
on us oldies reading the same.

Have a good weekend.
