Trouble Downloading

I tried to download a Windows Update, save location is desktop. WU gave me a
failed notification. I then tried downloading several different file types
from several different locations, such as drivers, photos, videos, email
attachments, etc. I tried downloading to different locations... all with the
same result. The download window disappears when the download is "complete",
but when I go to run or retrieve the file it is not there. I've used
"search" to find the file but it is nowhere on my hard drive.

Any thoughts? I can't download and save anything!

Windows version?

Is Windows Defender Beta2 installed?

Can you successfully download and install Windows Update via the website
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com or via Automatic Updates?

How to configure and use Automatic Updates in Windows XP:

How to schedule automatic updates in WinXP, Win2K and Win2K03

IOW, using the Windows Update website instead of downloading from Windows
Update or Windows catalogues?

With Automatic Updates enabled, do updates download that way?

IN RE Defender Beta2: For some users, there is a known bug when opening
email attachments and when downloading files (especially executables).

Start > Run > (type in) Regedit > OK

Navigate to this key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\Discardable\PostSetup\Component Categories\{56FFCC30-D398-11D0-B2AE-00A0C908FA49}

Right-click on it > Delete it > Close Regedit > Reboot.

Microsoft has established separate newsgroups for Windows Defender Beta2
support and comments. If the above didn't help, please post further
questions about the issue to one of those newsgroups. See
