Trouble with driver on Windows Vista Beta 2

We are having some trouble with a driver on Windows Vista. The driver does
not install cleanly on build 5384 (MSDN release); it did install on build
5308. We are in contact with the device manufacturer about this also. The
device in question is an RTL8150 USB to Ethernet adapter by Realtek. The
version that we are trying to install is 1.22, released May, 2006 (I believe
it was the 18th). This is the version that is on the Microsoft Update site.
It can also be downloaded from Realtek’s site at
http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/...eyword=rtl8150. The
device is tagged by “VistaUpgradeAdvisor” as needing to be manually installed
from Microsoft Update. The computer on which all this is being done is a
Panasonic Toughbook CF-18. I can send the full results of the Vista Upgrade
Advisor if desired.

Prior to testing scenarios, the driver files were copied to a folder on the
desktop. For all the scenarios, the failures were always one of two types.
For brevity the failure type will be listed with the scenario and the
description of the failure types will be documented after all scenarios are
documented.

Here is a list of scenarios that have been tried:

1) Plug in the device and choose “Search automatically for updated driver
software”. The driver failed to install (Type 1).
2) Plug in the device and choose “Browse my computer for driver software”.
The driver failed to install (Type 1).
3) With the device plugged in, find the device in device manager and attempt
to reinstall the driver via the properties dialog for the device. Choose
“Search automatically for updated driver software” The driver failed to
install (Type 1).
4) With the device plugged in, find the device in device manager and attempt
to reinstall the driver via the properties dialog for the device. Choose
“Browse my computer” The driver failed to install (Type 1).
5) With the device plugged in, locate the device driver install file
“NET8150.inf”, right-click on the install file and choose the install option.
The driver failed to install (Type 2).
6) With the device plugged in, locate the device in device manager and
update the driver from the properties dialog. Choose to have the driver
loaded from a specific install file using the inf file used in step 5. The
driver failed to install (Type 2).
7) With the device plugged in, go to windows update and have windows update
load the driver (it’s an optional driver). The driver failed to install
(Type 2)

Here are the failure types descriptions:
1) Dialog text says “Windows encountered a problem installing the driver
software for your device. Windows found driver software for your device but
encountered an error while attempting to install it. (question icon) Realtek
RTL8150 USB 10/100 Fast Ethernet Adapter. There is no driver selected for the
device information set or element.”
2) Dialog text says “Installation Failed”. Title bar says “Error”.

The device is listed in device manager as a generic “USB 10/100 Ethernet
adapter” after Type 1 failures. It is listed as an unknown device after type
2 failures. Both are under the unknown devices (big yellow question mark
icon) section.

If the device is uninstalled via the device manager after a Type 1 failure,
and then the device is plugged back in, the device finally does install under
scenario 1.

Finally, once the device driver is installed, unplugging the device without
“Safely removing the hardware” results in a complete Vista system hang that
can only be fixed by powering down the machine.

Please suggest if there is a better place to request help for this Vista
problem.
