Trouble install windows updates on Vista

I've tried for weeks to get some updates to install and have search far and
near through dozens of sites for help and troubleshooting. There are 10
updates that say they need to install but I get an error message every time.
This last time I got 80070570. It said 6 failed and 4 were not needed. I also
got another message that popped up that said they were all successful yet had
the error code 8024AFFF. I've tried installing the service pack and serval
other items suggested within the microsoft site as helpful solutions and they
will not install either. I started looking back and it seems it all started
around July 8th. Defender updates seem to be successful as well as a few
other minor ones. I first discovered this issue while trying to install the
windows live messenger. I hope this is enough info and that some might be
