Trouble installing 64 bit signed drivers in windows server 2008 (x

Hi. We are thinking about migrating from a linux based NAS technology to
Windows server 2008 acting as a NAS platform. We have a number of adaptec
RAID controllers that work fine under linux, but on the test Windows 2008
server the drivers won't install.

Specifically, we are trying to install the 64 bit signed driver from adaptec
for the 31605 RAID controller. The driver is signed and designed for the 64
bit version. However windows server 2008 refuses to install the driver, even
when I tell it to use the supplied driver specifically.

Acoording to the Adaptec knowledge base, there is a problem with a faulty
install script in Windows Server 2008 - see here:
http://ask.adaptec.com/scripts/adapt...ted=1222856307
.. I can't find anything in the MSFT KB about this.

Does anyone know how to fix this? We never had this kind of issue with
Linux, so my apologies if this is a well known issue that has a common fix.

Thanks,
Mike

So are you using Action Pack or MSDN media kits? and does the logged error
match precisly the adaptec report?
---
The issue has been reported with the "Microsoft Action Pack DVD (MAPS),
X14-62418, 4/2008" and the MSDN DVD "Windows Server 2008 (x64 and x86),
English, Disc 4454, May 2008" so far.
----
.... If so, you can persue Microsoft Support through these programs. If you
are seeing this on Retail (FPP) or Volume License media, then Adaptec might
still be your first point of support. If it got "designed for" Server 2008
then it should work with those media sets.

We use Technet Direct for product evaluation, which is neither action pack
or MSDN, but probably is in the same bucket. I was not aware that the MSFT
products were different based on the various distribution programs.

If I got normal (retail) windows server 2008 install DVD and installed
that, would the technet license code still work?

thx
mike

It is not necessary to supply the keys for a complete install. So you should
be able to proceed past the adaptec driver point.

If this proves to be an issue with the MSDN/Technet/MAPS media kit then you
should pursue through the program support resources. In the past, it has
been necessary to use the correct media with the correct licenses, both a
matter of support and licensing. - The program support resources should be
able to provide you with an authoritative answer on license legal usage.

Hello Kevin and Mike,
Does the media prompt you to install either 32-bit or 64-bit?
I haven't seen this previously but I have a suspicion after reading the
link.
The Action pack and some of the MSDN media that allows you to install
either 32-bit or 64-bit is using 32-bit setup.exe to install either platform
You are booting to a 32-bit WinPE in setup and running 32-bit setup.exe. I
wonder if that scenario is caused by attempting to load the 64-bit drivers
while in 32-bit setup.
Thanks,
Darrell Gorter[MSFT]
