Trouble installing automatic updates - Vista SP2

I have used automatic updates since I bought my PC back in September 2008.
However, since October 2009 it has failed to install the updates.

I'm running Vista SP2 with Norton as my firewall/Anti Virus (although that
has been installed since I've owned the computer)

Once I start the computer, the icon for updates appears in the taskbar. If I
click on 'Install Updates' the PC starts to install but then hangs.

When I look at the history, I can see that the 9 updates that require
installing have failed to install since 17th October.

Can anyone help??

What are the KB numbers for those 9 updates, Paul?

What's the name & version of the Norton application (e.g., Norton 360 2010)
and is your subscription current?

Did you upgrade to a 2010 version of this application in September or
October?

Was a Norton free-trial preinstalled on your computer when you bought it?

Apologies for the delay!

I'm using Norton 360, but not sure what year - probably 2008 as that's when
i bought it.

I renewed the subscription in June 2009 and will have to do so again in June
2010.

I did not install any applications or upgrades in October 2009.

There was nothing pre-installed on the machine - which is a HP Pavillion DV
9700

I have tried disabling Norton and then running Windows update, but this did
not work.

Thanks again.

Norton applications are notorious for not upgrading (or uninstalling)
cleanly. Try this:

1. Download the Norton Removal Tool, saving it to your desktop:
ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/englis...moval_Tool.exe

2. Close any open applications (i.e., anything with an icon on the taskbar).

3. After making certain you have a copy of your Product Key handy, uninstall
all Norton software (including LiveUpdate and any Norton Add-ons) via
Control Panel | Programs | Uninstall a program (or Control Panel | Programs
and Features, if using Classic view).

4. IMPORTANT! => Enable the Windows Firewall immediately after rebooting.

NB: You're "working without a net" now: Don't to ANYTHING else online (e.g.,
browsing; reading email; chatting) until you've completed Step #7 below!

5. Right-click on the file you saved in Step #1 above and select Run as
Administrator. Don't TOUCH your keyboard until the run completes, then
reboot.

6. Do a clean install of Norton 360 *2010* using your Product ID & reboot:
http://www.symantec.com/norton/suppo...080514162318EN

TIP: Do not enable or install any Norton Add-ons (e.g., Norton
Anti-Phishing) just yet.

7. Manually and repeatedly run LiveUpdate until you get a "no more updates"
prompt.

8. Test.
