I had the problem with my Win XP Pro machine and this is what solved it,
(don't know if it's also applicable to Win 2000 though) :
From a previous post to this group from Oscar on 3/15/2005:
"Well guys after 4 hours of messing with this I can tell you what worked for
me. With any luck it can guide you too.
1. Download Windows Install Clean-Up program at
http://support.microsoft.com/d*efaul...;en-us;2903*01 and
install.
(You can find it in the programs section of your start menu after install)
2. Download .net framework 1.1 (file name dotnetfx.exe) at
http://www.microsoft.com/downl*oads/...=262*D25E3-F58...
(dont install yet)
3. Download .net service pack 1 (file name NDP1.1sp1-KB867460-X86.exe) at
http://www.microsoft.com/downl*oads/...=a8f*5654f-088...
=en (dont install yet)
4. Run Windows Clean-Up and remove the defective .net framework, Reboot.
5. Go to the start menu, then run. Type in "msconfig" and set it to
Diagnostic and then reboot to prevent other software from getting in the way
of the install.
6. Run dotnetfx.exe for a fresh new .net install
7. Run NDP1.1sp1-KB867460-X86.exe, it will prompt that its already
installed, do it anyways.
8. Go back to msconfig and set it back to normal, reboot.
9. Run the regular windows update thru website or automatic service.
It should now do the update that previously resulted in errors. Good luck! "
Thanks Oscar...( that was my father's name >
