Trouble installing programs on Windows Vista

Hi,

I recently bought a new computer with Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit
installed. I purchased Norton Antivirus 2007 online, downloaded it but it
would not install. The window would open that said "Norton Antivirus" on the
top but the rest of the window was just white. After several attempts, I gave
up, went to the store and bought the cd. When I tried installing that, same
problem. The window would open but it was a blank white box. Frustrated with
that, I purchased McAfee antivirus online, downloaded it, but alas same
problem, the window would open to install but it was just white. I have tried
everything. I tried running in XP compatability mode, right clicking and
installing as administrator (even though I am logged on as adminstrator)
turned the user account access off - nothing has worked. I have also noticed
that Quickbooks downloaded updates from the internet but when it asks if I
want to install the update I click ok and nothing happens. Neither Norton or
McAfee's tech support have been able to help me.

If someone out there could please help me! I am not at all tech savy so
maybe I am just missing something simple. Please help if you can.

Its possible those are incompatible versions of Macfee's and Symantecs AV
utilities. The last time I checked, Norton 2007 was still in beta, but
supported Vista x86 and x64, so thats quite strange. Which version of
Quickbooks are you running, the only compatible version right now is 2007.

Here is a link to a list of compatible AV software:
Computer Associates eTrust

http://www.my-etrust.com/Microsoft/vista/default.aspx

NOD32 from ESET for Windows Vista x86 and x64
Licensed users of NOD32 may download their software. If you have not
purchased NOD32 you may purchase it, download a free 30-day trial, or
contact an ESET representative for assistance. A valid username and password
is required in order to download the software.

Windows Vista 32 & 64 Bit -

Windows Vista 32 & 64 Bit (LAN Update Server) -

AVAST! 4.7.892 Home Edition for Vista x86 and x64

avast! 4 Home Edition is a full-featured antivirus package designed
exclusively for home users and non-commercial use. Both of these conditions
should be met! Our company offers the Home Edition free of charge, since, in
our opinion, it is possible to avoid global virus spreading by efficient
prevention; however, many users are not able to or do not want to pay for
antivirus software. This page will show you the most important features of
this program.

This Andre stooge is only promoting Microsoft Partners AV software. If you
want a very good free AV, which is compatible with Vista, I suggest Avast
Anti-Virus.

Stop trying to push Microsoft Partners AV software. The person has already
spent enough money on AV which does not work

It's hard to know what you're missing without seeing your computer. Can
you install any other programs? I'm assuming you could because you
mention QuickBooks. The QuickBooks update problems worry me also. You
shouldn't have to run either Norton or McAfee in compatibility mode.
Here are a few suggestions to try and narrow down the troubleshooting:

1. If you were able to install other programs (like QuickBooks) and then
started having problems, can you figure out what changed?

2. Are there any clues in Event Viewer? Start>Run>eventvwr.msc [enter]

3. Create a new user account. Make it an administrator. Try and install
from that new account. If everything works, then I'd transfer any data
from your old account and use the new one. Delete the old account. Make
sure you have at least two administrative accounts on the system, one
for emergencies. Make your daily working account a standard user.

4. Can you download anything from the Internet?

Thanks for all the suggestions! I will give them a shot when I get home from
work tonight. Some additional info - the only things I have installed on the
new computer is the newest version of Netscape and Quickbooks 2006. I
downloaded Netscape on my computer at work (which is XP) copied it to a CD
and installed from that. I have downloaded windows updates and driver updates
from the internet which installed fine. The downloads for Quickbooks and the
antivirus software however have failed to work. Both the Norton and McAfee
websites say that their newest versions are compatible with Vista.

problem ever get resolved? I'd be interested to hear what happened
