Trouble opening files on disks

I purchased Vista Home Premium in Jan 08. Since then I have been unable to
open files previously stored on Cds that were saved when I had Windows XP as
my program?

Is the program needed to open that file type installed on Vista? What
is the .ext(ension) of these files?

If you were running one of those programs that let's you drag and drop to a
CD like a hard drive, you need that program to read the CD.

I took the disks with the stored files into my office and the open instantly
using Office Professional but not at home with Vista?

Again, that begs the above questions:
What application/what file extension? Is the app installed on your home
Vista PC?

Office Professional is not installed on my home computer, only Microsoft Home
and Student which includes Word 2007
