Trouble signing in, and did Live replace my MSN messenger?

Yesterday afternoon I was kicked off of MSN messenger and it wouldn't sign in
for a couple of hours. During that time I downloaded Live Messenger to see
if I just needed an upgrade. Neither Messenger would sign in. Then after a
couple of hours the MSN one started working by itself.

This morning after rebooting my computer the MSN one isn't in the system
tray. Did Live replace it?

I can't get Live Messenger to sign in, even though the status on the sign in
screen says "Online". The error code that comes up after I can't sign in is
"80072efd". I've tried turning off my Norton Internet Security Firewall to
see if that would help, and it does not.

Any help would be appreciated!

Greetings,

Windows Live Messenger is MSN Messenger 8.0, it just got renamed -- so yes, it replaces it as
it's considered an upgrade to MSN Messenger 7.5. However, this would've happened immediately
when you installed Windows Live Messenger as the installer shuts down MSN Messenger and
replaces it on the spot.

Regardless, what you're receiving is the standard "can not connect" error code which in this
case probably means Norton is blocking it, regardless if it's turned on or not which is
normal software firewall behavior. You may want to go into the Norton allowed programs,
remove Messenger from the list and then re-add it.

Alternatively if you're still having difficulty and looking for a "quick fix" back to the way
things were, you can quickly use System Restore to go back to before WLM was installed. To
do so, click Start, then Help & Support, then "Undo changes to my computer using System
Restore" and go through the wizard.

Why hasnt anyone been able to fix this? I have seen several replys from
Jonathan Kay, but none of the fixes have worked. I do not have any
firewall/av software running and i have enabled all ports on the router that
i could find. I get this error every few hours regardless of if its old msn
or new live messenger. And it never started happening until a few months ago.
a repair fixes it everytime but why should i have to run a repair in msn
everytime i want to login?

Hi Jonathan,

Messenger works well about once a day since I followed your instructions. I
did an extensive support chat with Norton and they determined that the
firewall is not the problem. I tend to agree with them, after going through
the support steps with them. I asked what they thought I should do. They
suggested reinstalling Messenger. Do you think this would help? Can this be
done without losing all of the current contacts?
