Well, I'm still having trouble using ftp to post content to my website, on my
new laptop running Vista. The ftp program I'm using (and have used
succesfully in the past on older computers) is accessed simply by typing
"ftp://" and then the url of my website. Using Windows Internet Explorer,
I'm then prompted to enter my user name and password and then I can browse
the website normally (though sometimes I get stuck in a mode where it wants
to show me a folder called "pub", which appears to be empty.) However,
several people have explained to me that there is no way to make Windows
Internet Explorer allow me to "paste" content to my site. I've found this to
be the case.
So, I've been trying to use Windows Explorer instead. With Windows
Explorer, I'm finding it not possible to use ftp to view the directories or
files of my website. When I view a directory with Windows Internet Explorer
and then follow the directions to see the same page using Windows Explorer, I
get an error message that says "An error ocurred opening the folder on the
FTP server. Make sure you have permission to open this folder. Details: 550
Failed to change directory."
Note that when I'm looking at my website with the ftp program in Windows
Internet Explorer, and then follow the directions to view the page in Windows
Explorer, the website does not prompt me to re-enter my user name and
password. I don't know whether that has anything to do with the problem or
not.
Is there some setting I need to change to allow Windows Explorer to
succesfully ftp to my website?
Do I need to give up on that ftp program and use something else?
A secondary problem I'm having with ftp, which I also had sometimes (but
less often) using Windows Internet Explorer, is that sometimes Windows
Explorer shows me a folder called "pub", which appears to be empty, and does
not allow me to navigate to the folder I actually want to see (called
"public_html"). How do I avoid getting shunted into this "pub" directory?
Thanks!
