One of my customers, has a HP computer, and was having troubles with various
issues. He did a 'non-destructive' restore on his system, and afterwards he
had lost all his data. We found his data under a different user account, but
there are several other issues that we need help with.
First, his previous installation was updated with XP SP2. The restore
copied back all the original files, which were pre SP1. When we go to the
Windows update page, we get the error message that the ActiveX settings won't
allow some functions on the page, and as result we cannot update his system.
I have a CD with the admin version of XP SP2, which we tried to install, and
it fails with an error saying the Setup had an error ( I didn't get the full
error message ). The automatic windows update isn't running either.
My thoughts are that there is either some spyware lurking, causing all the
troubles or that the situation with the 'non-destructive' restore caused
further damage since XP SP2 was on the machine before. We cannot uninstall
the SP2 because it's not listed on add/remove programs. We followed the help
information on the Windows Update help page, resetting the Internet Security
settings, which didn't help. I've scanned and removed all spyware that was
on the machine from before, but none of it was active and causing troubles.
The reinstallation was done 2 days ago.
Any thoughts, suggestions, etc?
Thanks in advance!
