How to troubleshoot Windowsupate for SP2' "update failed" message ?

On an XP home system I disabled the Norton AV and then hit
update.windows.com and let it apply SP2. It too lots of time to
download and start the installation and then simply said "update
failed".

The updatelog said the same thing.

How do I troubleshoot this ?

Hi

Some log files you can check for any clues or error messages:

%windir%\Svcpack.log
%windir%\setupapi.log

(%windir% is typically C:\Windows)

You may need to enable verbose logging to find the reason in one
of those log file, see here for how to enable it:
