Troubleshooting Windows Update for Power Point Viewer 2003

I have been getting update messages for two days now for a security update
for Microsoft Office PowerPoint Viewer 2003 - KB949041. When I look at the
log, it shows it has been sucessfully upgraded - 24 times!!!

I have been in to the MS support page, and have run the Malicious Software
Removal Tool. It said I had no virus in system, but the update message is
still appearing. I click on it and it is the same message, update MS PP
Viewer 2003. Is there a problem with this viewer? Should I uninstall it and
try installing again?

Hello Old Moos,

First - ensure you do not have "Vundo". Clean it up if you do.

It seems possible that your Windows installation has been deliberately
damaged by a trojan (Vundo, along any uninvited guests. (SDBot and ZLOB, all
protected by a rootkit.)) so as to prevent you updating your system or
removing the trojan.


Your first priority must be to cleanse your PC of all malware.


A very good antimalware app is SUPERAntiSpyware.

There is a free version (on demand scanning only), the paid for version
includes active monitoring, similar to Windows defender:

an update for BITS since Vista came out.

Is BITS disabled ? It can be set to Manual and the system will update
successfully but, will not update if BITS is Disabled.

Suggest you run the BITS Repair Tool to see if that helps resolve the issue
after installing the update for it:

my computer wont let me enable my automatic updates. everytime i hit apply
it

The symptoms you describe indicate that a malware known as
Vundo\Virtumonde is resident. Using Internet Explorer, have the system

1. Uninstall PowerPoint Viewer 2003 via Add/Remove Programs.

2. Install PowerPoint Viewer 2007:

I removed PPViewer 2003, installed PPViewer 2007 in its place, which cleared
the prior installation difficulty. This morning I was alerted to five or
six new MS updates, this time applicable to several 2007 Works programs,
including PPViewer 2007.

All the downloads and installs functioned perfectly.

and what if you do not have powerpoint viewer 2003 installed (not in
add/remove) but you do have Office 2003 pro? The pptview.exe file is still
present in the office11 folder, showing an older version than what the kb
949041 states.
