since my husband and i have no idea how to install windows.. we paid someone
to do it for us. they said they had a copy that they would install for us and
include in the price. well every time i try to do the updates from the web it
says that they fail because there is no key? i do not know what that means
but was once told that it is a crucial part of the windows system. we cannot
get up with this person who installed the program for us. any suggestions on
what to do?

The person that installed it may have given you or installed a "fake" key.
When you said that he had a copy and that he would install is what tipped me
off to that. If it's not a valid key then you may not be able to install
some updates manually. I would suggest to keep trying to get ahold of your
installer and find out if he has a valid key or ask for the key that came
with the box. It will have authentication marks to show if it's valid or
not.

Hope this helps.
