Trying to check for updates

I just went into Windows Update and wanted to check which
updates my labptop was using.

However, when I went to the Windows Update option it
seemed as though the only option was to install the
updates when actually all I was trying to figure out is
which updates I needed. I was then going to decide what I
wanted to download and install.

Its been awhile since I downloaded updates but I thought
there was the option to have Windows scan my machine and
determine what updates I needed and then give me the
option of what I wanted to install.

However, when I go in the only option was to install the
updates. I was never even shown what I was installing.

Is the way it is supposed to work?
