I need to convert an external hard drive (500 GB) from Fat32 to NTFS so I
can save large files. I have Vista Home Premium w/SP1

I found a website that tells me to use Run, and enter: convert k: /fs:NTFS.
But when I do I get this: "Access Denied as you do not have sufficient
privileges. You have to invoke this utility running in elevated mode." What
the heck does this mean? Is there any other way to do this, or can someone
help me with this?

What other information do you need from me to help me?

You go to the Run Command short-cut, you right click it and Select Run As
Administrator. You can permanently set that on the short-cut by using the
Advanced button.

Read it, because Admin is locked down to Standard user.

Easy way, first turn off UAC and reboot, then try again. You can
always turn it back on if you like it after.

While generally a safe procedure anytime you reconfigure a file system
from Fat 32 to NTFS there is some potential risk that you in rare
situations might lose some files or in a worse case trash the entire
partition. So be sure you have backup of critical files FIRST, just to
be safe. Once the process starts, walk away and do NOT touch the
keyboard and hope the power doesn't go out during the process.

1. On the Start menu, click "All Programs".
2. Click "Accessories".
3. Right-click "Command Prompt" and choose "Run as Administrator" from the
shortcut menu.
4. When the User Account Control dialog appears, click "Continue".
5. Now run the convert command

People have complained ad naseum about this....however, Mac OSx has done,
and still does, the same thing. Get used to it, IMO. It is not that
difficult to figure out nor time consuming to do.

Of cause you can change FAT32 to NTFS, and it can be realized by the windows built-in disk management.
But I think you should know that if you want to convert it back, only rely on the disk management can not realize perfectly and you should format the partition. So, here, I just want to share you something useful about the efficient way to finish the operation--through the newly released software named NTFS to FAT32 Converter, you can download the Trial Edition to experience its advantages it gives you in advance.
