I have vista and trying to make it dual boot with xp. I used disk
management console to shrink the vista partition and make a second
partition. Then when I tried to install xp (blue installation
screen) It only shows the vista c: drive (unknown drive). So it's
only letting me to format the vista drive. What I want is to install
to the second partition J: I even tried to rename it to B: drive,
but still does not show up. Why would that be? thanks.

Vista Premium does not play well in dual boot situations. While
diskpart.exe can shrink the volume, the problem comes in the MBR... Vista or
non Vista are the choices premium users have. While I understand Ultimate
has the ability to patch this I am not spending more money on MS. I have
done this many times starting with Windows 95 but Vista was my nemesis sort
of.

How I beat it was my PC allows me to select the boot disk on startup. So I
unplugged the Vista disks power, leaving a second disk. Installed Linux on
the second disk. Then plugged the Vista disk power back in a whala, two
OSes, 1 system, press F12 to select.

But this is PC manufacturer dependant I suspect.
