Hi:
This can be long shoot, but try the following I found in a forum:
"
Suggestion 1: Remove the temporary folder of Windows Update.
===============
Please be assured that the folder can be created automatically when running
Windows
Update.
1. Click Start, Click Run, type: cmd and press Enter. In the opened window,
type in
"net stop WuAuServ" (without quotations) and press Enter. You will receive a
message stating the Automatic Updates service was stopped successfully.
2. Click Start, Run, type: %windir% and press Enter.
3. In the opened folder, rename the folder SoftwareDistribution to SDold.
4. Click Start, Click Run, type: cmd and press Enter. In the opened window,
type in
"net start WuAuServ" (without quotations) and press Enter to restart the
Automatic
Updates service.
5. Click Start->Run, type: %windir% and press Enter.
6. Locate and open the System32 folder.
7. Find the CatRoot2 folder, right-click on it, and select RENAME. Change
the name
to CR2OLD. Make sure you press Enter after typing in the new name, so the
changes
are executed.
8. Close this window.
After that, please go to
https://update.microsoft.com/windows....aspx?ln=en-us to test
the
issue.
If the issue persists, please proceed to the next suggestion:
Suggestion 2: Download and install manually in Safe Mode
=================
1. Please download the update directly from the link below and save the
downloaded
file to the local disk C drive (C:\):
Update for Windows XP (KB917422)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/i...n&SrcCategoryI
d=&SrcFamilyId=71e96afc-bc4d-4666-998b-49857007e539&u=http%3a%2f%2fdownload.microsof
t.com%2fdownload%2f9%2f7%2f0%2f9701897a-9321-4989-a521-3f8b48deaaa4%2fWindowsXP-KB91
7422-x86-ENU.exe
2. Restart your computer and start pressing the F8 key on your keyboard. On
a
computer that is configured for booting to multiple Operating Systems, you
can
press the F8 key when you see the boot menu.
3. When the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, select Safe Mode, and
then press
Enter.
4. Log onto Windows by using the Administrator account and password.
Windows XP has a default administrator account named "Administrator". This
account
is only displayed when we enter Safe Mode, and this account was created when
you
setup up the computer. By default, there is no password for this account and
the
password is determined when you setup the Windows XP system.
NOTE: The password is blank by default unless you already set a password.
NOTE: In Safe Mode, your system display and desktop will look and perform
differently than in Normal Mode. This is only temporary. To go back to
Normal Mode,
we just need to restart the computer.
You can easily return to normal mode by restarting the computer. For your
convenience, I have included a related Knowledge Base article below:
A Description of the Safe Mode Boot Options in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default...B;EN-US;315222
5. Go to the C drive and double click the downloaded file on to install
KB917422 in
Safe Mode.
6. After the installation, please click Start, and type APPWIZ.CPL in the
open box
and click OK to open Add/Remove Programs. Please check if the update
KB917422 is
listed. If so, it is installed successfully. (If the system version is
Windows XP
Service Pack 2, we can use the 'show updates' feature in Add/Remove
Programs.
Otherwise, we cannot check the installed update.)
Please check if the update can be installed in Safe Mode.
"
Let me know if it works.
