trying to install a network printer

Hi, sorry first off if this is the wrong place to post this but I am
looking for some advice on an issue that I have got with vista.

I have been trying to install my canon ip4000 printer in my vista ulimate
laptop. the printer is connected to my desktop machine which is running
xp still. The printer is shared and I can see it on the network on the
laptop.

know when I tried to go to Add Printer but it comes up with "this
operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this
computer. please contact your system administrator". Now the thing is
the account I am using is an administrator. it's not the admin account
but another one with admin rights.

So then I turned UAC on and tried it again but now I have the extra
option of "Run as Administrator" Why do I get different options when UAC
running?

I would like to be able to run vista with out UAC running as I know what
I am doing, I don't wont windows to restricted me, grrr.

So now can add the network printer and I can find it. but when I get to
install it, it comes up with "specified print monitor is unknown" why?

I haven't got the password for the xp machine saved anywhere on the
network, but that shouldn't effect it all, as I would have thought that
it would come up with a dialog box asking for user/password. I can share
files ok, just every time I create the connection from the laptop to the
main machine I just type in a username/password and that works fine.

so the questions are:

Why can't I run add new printer as my login account with UAC turned off.

When I try to add a network printer it comes up with "specified print
monitor is unknown" why?

Not sure you went the right way first time so first you can turn off UAC as
I have, cause I am like you, I'm in charge!!
Next go to you XP and look at you printer in Start/Control Panel. Right
click the printer icon and choos Sharing from the menu. Share the printer.
Next on the Vista go the same route to Printers in Control Panel. In the
Blue bar click Add A Printer.Chose to add a Network Printer. It will search
for a printer but it it takes a while hit the Printer not Listed and next
the Browse button and you should see you XP, double click the XP icon and
the printer should show up. Right click and select. It may prompt you for
you printer CD.

All this of course depends on a working network. Hope yopu have one between
these computers.

You obviously have Network discovery in Vista turned on, because you can see
the XP machine.
I also have File Sharing ON
Password Protected OFF

I have same setup as you; printer hooked up to XP, with Vista in the LAN.

I hooked Vista to the XP printer by going into Vista's Network Sharing> Add
Network Device. Don't say that you want to hook a printer up to Vista, it
assumes that you are trying to directly connect a printer to Vista; look for
the Canon printer, and follow the prompts.
