Trying To Install XP SP2... Failed, Failed, Failed

I am trying to use Windows Update (manually, not via the system tray icon) to
install SP2, but something is wrong. When I first tried it I got error
0x8024402c. Any time I try from now onwards, even after reboots, I always get
Failed (immediately) with an error code of 0x8020000e. I notice the download
bar always shoots to 1.60 Mb (presumably a cached partial download) right
before it says Failed. I'd guess that partial download is corrupt, but I
can't find a way to clear the cached download and start over... any ideas? I
have managed to install SP2 on other machines quite happily in the past.

(Also, the system tray icon never seems to come up saying there's an update
any more - possibly because it thinks I'm already partway through downloading
an update?)
