Hi,

I was researching potential problems for xp sp2 and saw that it can be
real nasty with the Intel P4 Prescott.

I think I have one.,,,I understand the 3.00E means its a Prescott. I
am including the specs of my processor, etc below. I read somewhere
that a Revision of 8 or less is a problem. However, mine is B?

Can you experts look at the specs below and let me know if this is
going to a problem with xp sp2?

What can I do in advance to ensure I don't have a problem?

Many thanks
Russ

Thanks Shenan, I did come across that article in my research, but still
unsure what to do.
How would I go about updating BIOS

Hi k3
Welcome from the general group where you posted recently.
If you must test please use a proper test group - it can pizz-off some
people.
The below link must be the best there is with regard to everything
concerning SP2.

http://www.michna.com/kb/WxSP2.htm

I would also contact Intel - they should know exactly what problems you may
get.

http://www.intel.com/services/index.htm

I assume you went here to ID the CPU

http://www.intel.com/support/process.../cs-001465.htm

If you have time, look through some of the posts for the SP2 threads.

Thanks for the protocol advice and your posts, antioch.
I guess feedback from intel is the only sure way to know, so I will
await a reply from them.
Thanks again!

Hi k3
I see Shenan came up with a link I had been looking for.
So there was nothing in that link to help you?
Is your Prescott 478 pin do you know.

Cant remember if you have read this link or not

http://www.intel.com/support/process.../cs-015171.htm

I know you mentioned the bios.
Then you would need to find out/contact your Mobo maker or computer builder.
This could also help

http://www.intel.com/support/process.../cs-007984.htm

Also, see if you can see the Man Code No. on the CPU
E.G:- BX80546PG3000E
That would ID the CPU to one particular model.
For the moment I cannot think of getting any further - of course there is
the other route - shut your eyes, cross your fingers and hit the download
button, and to hell with the consequences.
I can give some help with that if you want to take that chance?
Or read the somewhat varied advice given to others in posts re the SP2
upgrade.
I do have some of them saved to file.

Thanks antioch.

Yes, I have thought about the "push the button and hope method" - of
course then I might not be able to get on line again for more help!

The links that have been posted were helpful in confirming much of what
I had read and/or learned earlier. I think there is a certain
technical knowledge level assumed to converse/understand on a
discussion board such as this. While I am learning, much of it is
beyond my comprehension level.

While perhaps the wimpy way out, I will likely take what I have learned
to a tech and point him in the right direction. He will be in a better
position to see if I indeed have the potential for a problem make
whatever changes might be needed in advance of the install & certainly
better able to get things going again if something goes wrong.

It's always good to realize when to call in outside hands-on help and I
think this is one of those cases. (I have learned the hard way in the
past in many areas!!)

Thanks again for your postings and kindness

Russ

Hi Russ
I fully understand your situation - I also believe that one cannot be too
cautious.
Do let us know what happens. It could help others

Hi,

Well, I am cautiously optimistic that all went ok with the xp sp 2
install. The machine has booted up 3 times without incident since the
installation.

I did wind up visiting the local tech person (where I bought machine)
and showed him the documentation, etc. He was very confident that I
had the correct BIOS and there would be no compatibility issues with
the mobo/processor. So with that, I went home to "push the
button."

The install went well and was quite a bit faster than when I installed
sp2 on the laptop. The only hiccup was a Norton error message at the
end which made it a little hard to shutdown the machine. Not sure it
made a difference, but I did have Norton AV + Firewall turned off
during the install, as others had recommended. Additionally, someone
had recommended that you should turn Norton AV-Firewall back on after
the install but before the first shutdown....this didn't agree in my
situation, making for a difficult initial shutdown.

As others have reported, you can easily be fooled into thinking the
install is hung up when the progress bars "pause" during
"cleanup." On the laptop, it stayed there for over 90 minutes and
on the regular PC, at least 45. There is hard drive activity you can
hear/see during all of this, so things are working. I can bet many
people have cancelled the install at this point, thinking something was
wrong. It would be nice if MS had a better on-screen indicator of
progress during long periods like this.

So hopefully things will continue to hum along and I can chalk this up
to "a lot of worry about nothing."

Thanks again, for the helpful posts, etc.

-Russ

Hi Russ
What great news - and I hope the system continues to behave.
It was a good idea going to your local tech man.
Yes they can last a long time - mine in Dec 2005 took 25 minutes.
Some people do give up.
Thank you for the info
