Trying to setup Windows Mail to Yahoo Plus POP3 account for first time

Cannot get Windows mail to connect to my Yahoo POP3 server.

Contacted Yahoo and we installed telnet and successfully connected to the
servers through there.

Old computer had Outlook express connected to the same account and I had no
problems.

Have checked the setting numerous times to insure they are correct. Have
tried different port #'s and different configurations - get different error
messages but still no luck. Have checked all the firewalls (only have one
on) and it has been configured to let Windows Mail have full access.

Here are the error messages associated w/ each port used.

The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'yahoo', Server:
'plus.pop.mail.yahoo.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 587, Secure(SSL): Yes,
Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for
this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of
inactivity. Account: 'yahoo', Server: 'plus.pop.mail.yahoo.com', Protocol:
POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): Yes, Error Number: 0x800CCC0F

An unknown error has occurred. Account: 'yahoo', Server:
'plus.pop.mail.yahoo.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 995, Secure(SSL): Yes,
Error Number: 0x80004005

Anyone know what I need to do?

Thanx.

Are you paying extra for that Yahoo account or have you installed YPOPs?
You have to do one of these to connect to yahoo.com using Windows
Mail.

Yes I am paying extra for the Yahoo Plus account - had it working with
Outlook Express - now can't get Windows Mail started. Used to use YPOPs too
but had too many problems and Yahoo was always trying to block it. Upgraded
the Yahoo account for $20 a year. Can access the yahoo server thru telnet so
it is not the account or my internet connection - is a problem somewhere in
Windows Mail.

Thanx

Tried those instructions - this is what I get:

An unknown error has occurred. Account: 'yahoo', Server:
'plus.pop.mail.yahoo.com', Protocol: POP3, Port: 995, Secure(SSL): Yes,
Error Number: 0x80004005

Tried removing the account and adding it again to see if I missed
something - keep getting same errors. Everything is setup as how the
instructions indicate.

This is what I received from Yahoo support: Can I reinstall Windows Mail as
indicated?

We appreciate the details you have provided. We see that both the POP
and SMTP telnet tests appear to have been completed successfully.

After careful review, we believe you may be experiencing issues with
your software mail client. This appears to be an accurate assessment,
since the POP and SMTP telnet tests prescribed operate under the same
manner as do software mail clients. A failure by a software mail client
to connect or authenticate, whilst a POP and SMTP telnet test is
successful, would indicate a software issue unrelated to your Yahoo!
Mail Plus account or network connectivity.

We recommend removing and recreating the Yahoo! Mail Plus account in
your software mail client using the settings listed below. If this does
not resolve the issue, you may also consider uninstalling and
reinstalling the software mail client to eliminate possible software
corruption.

If you have any questions regarding your software mail client, please
refer to the online help or contact the vendor's user support group.

Here are the basic server settings for Yahoo! Mail Plus:

Incoming Mail (POP3) Server: pop.mail.yahoo.com
Incoming Mail (POP3) Port: 110

Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server: smtp.mail.yahoo.com
Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Port: 25 or 587

Account Name/Login Name: Your Yahoo! Mail name (your address without the
"@yahoo.com")

E-mail address: Your Yahoo! Mail address (i.e. )

Password: Your Yahoo! Mail password (case sensitive)

Please note that:

* the Yahoo! POP server does not support Secure Password Authentication
* the Yahoo! SMTP server requires Authentication

Windows Mail is a part of Vista and very hard to uninstall or reinstall
without doing the same to the rest of Vista. You can, however, fix
many problems caused by antivirus software by removing your email
account under Windows Mail, then restarting Windows Mail and
creating the account again.

By the way, what if any antivirus software do you have and have you
ever had Norton or McAfee antivirus software on your machine?

It is strange that Yahoo support is recommending different
server names and different ports than what they have on their
website.

As Robert indicated, the problem may be with your antivirus.
As a test, uninstall that antivirus, then try Windows Mail again.
You can always reinstall the antivirus, although we recommend
the more compatible Avast or AVG products.

If your Windows Mail appears to be corrupted, the best solution
is to upgrade to Windows Live Mail:
