Trying to sync to laptop through USB but device is asking forExchange Server credentials

I gave my XV6700 HTC cell phone/PDA running WM6.1 to my dad. I had been
using it to sync data over-the-air with an Exchange server, but he doesn't
have an account on such a server, so I deleted that email account in
Messaging. I gave him the device and he plugged it via USB cable into his
laptop (XP), hoping to simply sync over USB with the Outlook data on the
laptop. Activesync on his machine sees the device, connects, can browse it,
etc. But when it tries to sync the Outlook data, the WM device asks for a
username/password for an Exchange server! Where is this setting - why does
it still think it needs an exchange server when synchronizing over USB to a
laptop? How do I make it forget about the Exchange server and just sync with
the laptop like it should? Also, oddly, it doesn't ask first (when
connected, like most WM devices I've seen) whether I want to set up a
partnership. Thanks in advance for any hints.

Mike

Did you perform a hard reset on the HTC before you passed it to your father?
This should clear out all settings pointing back to the exchange server and
it removes any trace of your corporate settings that may still linger on
your phone. In the wrong hands, this could be a potential security isse.
Of course, if you have already reset the phone this is a moot point.

Try a hard reset, then setup the phone and add a new partnership. This
kills two birds with one stone and is the preferred method to remove any
trace of an old account.

HTH,

Sean

Hi Sean,

I did not do a hard reset because I wanted him to have access to a bunch
of the preferences, freeware, etc. that I installed and don't have the time
to go reinstall everything... He won't even have data access on it, so I'm
not too concerned about security issues as long as my Exchange email account
credentials are wiped. Any way to make sure this happens without a hard
reset? Even after deleting that account in Messaging app, it still seems to
think it needs an Exchange server when connecting through USB to a PC
(although the address and username/password are indeed blank).

Thanks,

Mike

You may have already tried this method. If not, give it a shot....

Also, go to ActiveSync and try to add a new server source through 'Tools'
which should set up a new partnership with the phone/PC.

If these fail, your former exchange server is still referenced somewhere
within win mobile; look in the connection/connection settings and drill down
through all of the options. Try opening Activesync on your device and
looking for any exchange references there. Go to Menu | Options and choose
MS Exchange; click on Menu, the delete.

If the reference to the exchange server continues, I can only suggest a
reset.

Wish I could give you a better answer.

so today I bit the bullet, and did the cold reset, and guess what - the
thing still asks for ActiveSync credentials when trying to sync to a PC via
USB!!! Any ideas past that?!?

Thanks,

Mike

Mike,

I am sorry that did not solve your issues. Did you follow hard reset
instructions similar to what can be found at the link below? (it is a
Verizon link, BTW).

http://dts.vzw.guided.atomz.com/exec...ard_reset.html

Not trying to be insulting by offering some of the more 'basic' suggestions,
but often it is difficult to diagnose these types of lingering issues
without knowing exactly what has or has not been done.

If you did perform the steps above to return the HTC to it's 'in the box'
state, then it might be wise to uninstall Activesync from your father's
laptop and reinstall. Also, it might not be a bad idea to test this from
another laptop with activesync to see if the results are identical. If you
are still asked for exchange credentials on a differenct PC, then we know
the phone has settings that have not been cleared.

Outside of these suggestions, I am out of ideas. Cached
credentials/activesync settings are generally what causes any PDA or cell to
look for an exchange server. We've tried several methods to resolve, and
short of some settings on the PC, I cannot think of any other way to
diagnose without actually looking at the phone.

Sean
