Trying to understand my calender

I Have Win. 7 Home Premium and WLM 2009.

When I 'Send in e-mail' from my calender the reminder comes as soon as I
open WLM rather than at the time of the event. I use the 'Save' facility,
but I am obviously missing something or am I expecting too much. Any
suggestions?
