Trying to update or auto update locks up system

Just started suddenly. May have been triggered by auto update trying to
download but stayed at 0% download.
Around this time the trouble seemed to start.
If auto update is turned on windows & menus freeze. CPU usage hovers around
100%. Seems ok if auto update is turned off.
If I try to update manually IE's window freezes with just the scrolling
progress bar moving.
If I try to close the window it sometimes closes but after a number of
minutes.
Even tried rolling back Windows a few days but this did nothing. This was
before I realised what I think is causing the issue.
Nothing has been changed or programs installed for some time.

XP Pro SP2

Any ideas anyone?

I have the same problem on a new install on a dell laptop. I can't get even
the first update. The system freezes as soon as I click on WU.

I am also having a similar problem using the windows update site today.
My Automatic Updates notified me that there were new updates, (I have
it set to notify only), so I went to Windows Update, but it is taking
literally minutes to check and see which files I need. It's always
been very quick. I had been checking each day for new updates, since
it was around the time when they're normally released. Is there a
problem with the site?
It was also just about impossible to do anything else on the computer
at that time, as if CPU use was high.
It eventually offered the appropriate files, after quite some time.

After my last post I did install the updates that were eventually
dsiplayed. I just tested Windows Update again and it seemed to run
faster now, which is about 2 hours later.

I do have two questions now, though:

Is it normal for CPU use to jump to 100% at some time while windows
update is checking the system? (Also, is it normal for the CPU use to
jump to 100% if opening a new browser window?) The use drops right
back down afterwards but I never noticed it before.

I have two incidences wuauclt.exe running as processes in the Task
Manager, one is in System using 7500K and the other is in my name using
5900K.
(When I started writing this there were two incidences of the file
running, but now there's only the one in my computer name area is
showing.) Should there be two wuauclt.exe running sometimes? (Maybe
one is the autoimatic updates which I have set to "notify but not
install" and the other might be from manually running Windows Update
from the site itself??)

Thanks-
Vickie

I'm having the same problem with 2 of my Pentium 3's, but 2 of my Pentium 4
updated fine. I reformated both of my Pentium 3 computer's and it still
freezing in about a minute or two. I can't do anything at all, I have to hard
shut down by holding down the power button until it turns off. Have anyone
found out what is going on yet? This all started when this new update came
out!!! There gotta be something going on. I get locked up not just on
screening the update, I get locked up in a minute or so.

Seeing the same problem on a freshly built Windows XP Pro SP2 Pentium
III 1GHz 128Mb 30Gb Netvista 6579TAA with latest available BIOS (3.7)

Built using XP Pro, I then installed XP SP2 from the 250Mb full
download file. Installation is regionalised - locale = Australia,
Language = English (Australian)

When I show it to the web, it locks up shortly after. Process explorer
shows that the problem starts when wuauclt.exe starts, starting an
svchost.exe instance. The svchost.exe uses 95+% of CPU time.

I disabled Automatic updates, the problem went away, but of course I
cannot leave auto updates disabled as it will fill up with spyware etc
as time goes by.

Thought I would update using Windows Update, but it needs the Auto
Updates service enabled, and when I enable this it locks up as usual.

*** However *** if I am VERY patient (5-10 minutes or more) the Windows
updates prompts as usual for the "download & install of the first bits
of Windows update.

I am prompted to restart ofter the first 3 items install - all normal
here. Turned on auto updates again, same heavy CPU use by SVCHOST>EXE
as describe above. No doubt if I am patient enough, it will eventually
get all the updates, but this has not fixed the problem.

This is a customer's machine so it has to be right. I cannot just patch
it up and send it back as it will certainly come back again.

I have used exactly this building process for Windows XP on many other
machines and had no trouble, it is just this one machine I am having
the issue with. I have swapped all hardware except the mainboard and
CPU, and have reinstalled Xp as described on more than one hard drive,
problem remains identical.

Any ideas would be appreciated.....

I'm sorry. I thought it might be helpful if "people who might be in
position to know something" could see there were similar problems all
in one place. It seemed as if these things might all be related.
Wasn't trying to hijack your post or dissuade others from helping you.

That's ok Vickie.

I replied to this thread with what worked for me, but it looks like it
didn't go through.
This what I wrote.

Problem fixed! After waiting some time on WA website with the window frozen
the updates finally came up and installed.

Everything back to normal now even with auto updates turned on.
WA website searches quickly now too.

Sometimes It's good to walk away from the computer for a while! This was all
I did to fix it.

I did experience 100% CPU activity prior to fixing the issue.(with
everything frozen)
After that CPU use when update checking varies a lot but doesn't stay on
locked on 100% as before.
