Trying to Update Windows Update Software

When I visit the Windows Update Site it tells me that
there is a new version of the software that needs to be
installed and then it tells me to click "Install Now" the
nwhen I click Install Now it begins Downloading the
update it says "Downloading 100%" and then moves
to "Registering 100%" but it stops once it
hits "Registering 100%" and stays with that screen Then
when I try to access the Windows Update again the screen
just stops at the "Checking version of windows update
software" I've tried going to

http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/updtlp.htm

and following the steps, I've tried

WINUP: "Software Update Incomplete, This Windows Update
Software Did Not Update Successfully" Error Message When
You Visit the Windows Update Web Site.

and I have also tried the

http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...6/unicode/iuct
l.cab

and Installing it manually, but after I install it
manually and visit the windows update site it tells me I
need to update the software. So no success at all because
it falls back to stopping at the "Registering 100%"
screen.

I was wondering if anyone could help me try to solve this.
Thanks.

BTW I have a Dell Inspiron 9100, Windows XP Home SP1

SP2 installed and working fine except the Auto Update V5 page hangs and
fails

On the bottom of the browser was a yellow icon
Clicked it and it said enable/disable plug ins

in the upper disabled window was a line referring to a active X file
I selected and ENABLED this active x file
Closed the window and all is now working and checking for available updates.

Good Luck ..Jim

I'm having the same trouble as the original poster; it isn't a SP2 issue,
because I'm running SP1 (as was the original poster). I'd actually like to
figure out what the problem is so that I can get SP2.

Also, there are no icons at the bottom of the status bar, save for the
'Done' and 'Internet' icons that are always present there.
