Hello,

I bought 4 years ago computer with installed XP Home Edition. I didn't get
any CD's of XP. I have the legal product key, but now when I try to update XP
or other Microsoft softwares I got a notice of illegal version.

What I can do? The store is now working anymore and producer of computer
couldn't help me.

I don't want to buy again XP.

Can someone help me?

Regards,
Minna

You have a product key and no installation CD/restoration CD?
Did you lose the CD (or CD set), never create it per manufacturer
instructions or what?
If they did not give you a method of installing everything in case of a
problem - and you did not follow up as to why - that is your bad, especially
if they are now out of business.

Is the product key you claim to have on a sticker on the machine?

My suggestion is:

How to replace Microsoft software or hardware, order service packs and
product upgrades, and replace product manuals

I have a product key, but I never got an installation CD's. And I also don't
have restoration CD. I remember, that when I first time used my computer, it
didn't asked me to do restoration CD. Perhaps the made it already at the
store and gave it to me with manuals, but I don't have it anymore.

I have a sticker on the machine.

So is it possible to get a replace?

When someone gives you the suggested fix - it is customary to try said fix
before asking them to give the same fix to you again. ;-)

However - since you seemed to have missed it (appreciate the details
though); here is the suggested fix again:

How to replace Microsoft software or hardware, order service packs and
product upgrades, and replace product manuals
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326246

Visit that web page using the link given. Note the contact numbers and such
and utilize those to contact the appropriate offices to find out *if* you
can get a replacement CD in your case.

Microsoft will only be able to replace CDs for products you have proof of
purchase/ownership of - any third party products (things that don't come
installed with the Windows XP OS for example) will be your responsibility to
get replacements for. (If Microsoft is able to help in your situation at
all...)

Worst case scenario - given you have a product key sticker - you could
borrow a friends Generic OEM Windows XP Home Edition CD and utilize it with
your product key to install cleanly. (Whatever you do not backup, you
lose.) Essentially -what i am saying is that if you can find a generic OEM
Windows XP Home Edition installation CD from someplace - chances are you
will be able to utilize it with your product key.

(Generic means it is not "branded" by the company that provided it to the
user - like Dell, HP, IBM, etc.)

When you say you're trying to "update XP" what exactly are you doing?

If you're trying to install updates via Windows Update, you should qualify for
free support from Microsoft. Visit the Microsoft web site.

Harry.

Try to get the update again and you should be prompted to validate your
computer as genuine microsoft. Go ahead and validate it and you should after
your validation is complete be able to install microsoft products.
