Having read much by Googling on this topic but I still cannot turn off
the automatic updates on my WinXP(home edition) -- I already did:
1. Control Panel -> Security Center -> Change the way security Center
alerts me -> unchecked "Auto Updates"
2. Run -> services.msc -> Security Center -> Start Type -> Manual

But the Control Panel -> System -> "Automatic Updates" are still with
"Automatic Update" checked and all options dimmed that I cannot change
anything.

Where this is in ultimate control?

Thanks for any hints!

Joe

Set it to disabled.

You are using an Admin Account aren't you? Never seen this before.

"Linux" would be a good idea! 8-> I would love to add one more to my
linux clusters but I do need a Windows machine.
Perhaps my English was not precise by saying "ultimate control" -- are
there any other places I can try to turn it off?

Thanks! .... I already disabled "services.msc" --> "Automatic Update"
(also disabled its "logon" -> Profile1"). But the "Control panel" -->
"Automatic Update" are still have the "automatic" checked and the
everything is dimmed as impossible to make any change .... wired.

Apparently "Big Brother Bill" has decided that everyone should take his
automatic updates whether they like it or not. I've had mine turned off wiith
success until tonight. Now I cannot get updates because I get the message
that one or more items that are required are not running. Guess what,
automatic updates are on the list.

Automatic Updates in Services must be running in order for you to manually
download updates. Just having it on does not mean you will get Automatic
Updates.
