How do I turn off automatic update in windows 98? I have a slow dial-up
connection and when I log on after a few minutes everything slows down and
the Windows Update message comes up. I don't want it to do that
automaticly...I want to tell windows when I want to update. In theinternet
options I have auto update unchecked but that looks like it is for IE only.
Thanks for any information, Allyn

I don't have Win98 handy, but I think this is something you can set in
control panel.

Lanwench, If it is there I can not find it...and I have looked everywhere.
After one update it has been doing it automaticly ever since and I haven't
been able to find anywhere to shut it off. Thanks, Allyn

Never having used the automatic update in Win98, I am just guessing
here but try these in the order below.

1. Try disabling it in the Task Scheduler.
2. Try disabling it in Msconfig
(Start-Run-MSCONFIG-Startup tab)
3. See if there is an entry in Control Panel-Add/Remove

Alan, Thank you very much...it was in the msconfig...startup tab. A check box
for
"Critical Updates", and now it is un-checked. Again...many thanks, Allyn
