Turning on automatic updates

The automatic updates icon is on the toolbar and keeps telling me it is
turned off. When I click it, it says it cannot be turned on, it cannot be
turned on via control panel either. When accessing services and clicking
automatic, "Error 1058: The service cannot be started, either because it is
disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it."appears.
Here I am stuck and do not know what to do.

I have tried this but it continues to give me the error 1058 after I click
start on automatic update. Is there something else I can try?

Judging from similar posts here in the past month or so, the behavior may be
due to a Vundo-ZLOB-SDBot infection, all of which is protected by a rootkit.

Unexplained computer behavior may be caused by deceptive software

Run a thorough check for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis log
to an appropriate forum.

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use (in
conjuction with some other utilities). HijackThis will NOT fix anything on
its own, but it will help you to both identify and remove any
hijackware/spyware with assistance from an expert. **Post your log to

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

Hi,
Thanks for your quick reply, the solutions seemed to get rid of Vundo -
which was on the system - and stopped the pop-up web-pages but now when I
look in "services.msc", automatic updates is not even there. Can you tell me
how to turn on/reinstall automatic updates.
Many thanks,
Adam.
