Have you gone to start>all programs>accessories>system
tools> windows security?
There is a link at the bottom that states "automatic
updates" if you click on that it will give you a screen
and you can choose to take it off.

I'm no expert, but have you tried disabling it in 'services' and / or
msconfig startup and services?

Brian.

I have the same problem with my computer, running XP Pro, and Service Pack 2.

The option to change Automatic Update is "Greyed" out, and I can't change
anything. I've emailed Microsoft, but still haven't got a reply? If anyone
knows how to "fix" the "greyed" out options, please help.

Via several emails with microsoft, apparently the "greyed" out error may
occur if your computer belongs to a domain. I still haven't learned if this
this is fixable, since my computer belongs to my university's domain.
