Two contacts for one person in Messenger

Hello there,

(I think I might have asked this question before but I just can't find the
thread. If so apologies for the second post).

I am sure I am not the only one that has those annoying friends with more
than one Windows Live ID for messenger.

I am wondering if there is a way of having both contacts merged together? in
one single Windows Live contact within my Live contacts address book? Reason
is that I end up with 2 contacts for the same user in my Addressbook and
this is soooo annoying!

Particularly because I use Plaxo.com to sync my Yahoo, Gmail and outlook
calendars, as well my Yahoo and Outlook address books. I would like to try
to sync my Live Contacts as well but I am afraid that because of such
multiple contacts I might end-up with duplicates, or even worse messing
about my so far perfect sync.

I noticed that in Windows live contacts (when editing a contact info) there
is a field called "other instant messaging address". I was wondering how
this field is used, and if it could be used for to (somehow) sort out my
problem.

If not, then Microsoft should consider this a feature request :-p

Regards,
P.

Greetings,

There is no 'merge' capability. If you want those two contacts on your Messenger contact
list, then you'll need to have two contacts.

Jonathan,

Thank you for the response.

Any ideas for what the "other instant messaging address" field would be used
for? I assume then it would just be used as a free text field?

Regards,
P.

Hi,

To the best of my knowledge, it's just there for reference/future development.

Sadly, Jonathan is correct, we currently have no way of merging two contacts
into one.

It poses an interesting question though, what would you want it to look
like? I mean, if we combined Bob1 and Bob2 into a single icon in the
contact list and both the Bobs were online, I suppose that would be easy -
show Bob as online. But what if Bob1 is online and Bob2 isn't - what should
we show? Online (and hide the fact that Bob2 is offline)? That might be
reasonable. But what if Bob1 is away and Bob2 is busy, what would we show
then?

And which Bob would you expect to be IM'ing when you double clicked on Bob?
Bob1? Bob2? Both?

What do you guys think? If we added this feature, how would you like it to
work?
