Two Different Versions of Windows Update?

I have two computers, each running Windows XP Home. Each has a
pre-installed shortcut icon for Windows Update on the start menu.

But on Computer 1, the startup page has a link to scan for updates, after
which I can select those I wish to install.

On Computer 2, the startup page offers two options: Express Install and
Custom Install. It also has notice to the effect that "automatic updates"
is turned on.

With all the current commotion about SP2, I absolutely don't want automatic
updates. How can I change the computer 2 settings to be the same as on
computer 1?

Computer 2 has the latest (v5) Windows Updater. Computer 1 can have it too,
just change the v4 to v5 in the address line.
You can switch off the automatic updates in "Automatic Updates" to the right
"Select Time..." then More Options, or go to the security console under
Start/Control Panel.

Hi PT,

To turn off Automatic Update, just select Start > My computer and go to
Properties and select the Automatic Update tab and check the option to turn
off Automatic updates.

It appears you have downloaded the UI controls on computer 2 when you access
the Windows Update V5 site http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
Once the UI controls have been downloaded it will always redirect you to V5
site. Once you have accessed to the V5 site you will no longer be able
access to the V4 site "http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/". You will
find alot of new and added features with our Windows Update V5 site. I've
included a helpful link below that provides a summary of added features.

I've also included a link on "What new with Windows update"! The next
version of Microsoft Windows Update? It's simple-changes to the Web site's
technology offer faster and better ways to get the updates that your PC
needs. More in-depth information helps you choose and manage updates that
you install.

It looks as if Computer 2 has already replaced WU v4 with WU v5 (via
Software Distribution Service 2.0).
To confirm this the update page on machine No.1, the Update page URL will be
v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com etc. and on computer 2 it will be
v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com etc.
On the computer 2 can you check if you have the file Iuhist.xml, it is
normally located C:\ProgramFiles\WindowsUpdate\V4
