Two New Vista Home Desktops cannot maintain Lan Connection

We have recently purchased two new Vista Home desktop machines. Our home
network is wired, and consists of a broadband cable modem and linksys 10/100
switch. The Full network map in Vista shows the two comps connected to the
modem through the switch but neither comp can see the other on the network.

A diagnostic returned a suggestion to reboot the switch and modem which I
have done several times. Each time the computers do start to register each
other but it is an off and on kind of thing and after a few minutes the
connection between the two is dropped again. Another diagnostic returns the
same suggestion that the modem and/or router be powered off for ten seconds.

At no time is the shared internet connection through the switch lost (except
of course when the modem and switch have been unplugged as directed).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you got at least one shared folder on each computer. You need at least
one on each otherwise there is nothing to see!

Yes both have several folders in the 'public' directory set to share; 'public
documents', 'public music', public pictures', 'public videos', 'public
downloads'...all set to share.

Aslo bizzare, we are able to play multiplayer games over the lan connection
(we discovered this last night). So they are indeed connected as the full
map suggests, they just do not show up as such or, if they do, they cannot
be accessed for file sharing. (When I try a window opens telling me that
there ws a problem accessing '//comp2' - just an example - and suggests
running the diagnostic to fix it which will then tell me to once again power
down my modem/router). I have even tried disabling Window's firewall
completely on both machines to see if that is the problem and it had no
effect.
