Two Updates Downloaded Automatically But Won't Install One Of Them

These are two recent updates referencing kb951847 and kb967715.

When I shut down my PC last night at midnight the updates started
installing. 6 1/2 hours later, they still weren't finished. I did a hard
shut-down and restart, tried to shut down again so the unfinished updates
could install and the screen showed that update 2 of 2 had installed and the
Shield icon was missing from my systray.

I tried to open Outlook but got an error message so decided to reboot to see
if that would fix the Outlook problem and when I did, the update started
again. This time it says it is installing update 1 of 1.

One of Microsoft's 'helpful' suggestions was that I should go to www.
update.microsoft.com to get the latest update software. I did that but the
problem continues.

The downtime on this is unacceptable. My laptop completed the entire update
in a few minutes' time. My desktop is dead in the water for almost 10 hours!

If I didn't have a second PC I'd have to get on the phone to Microsoft and
find out that they don't accept phone calls unless you pay them to help you
fix the mess they created.

Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

1) What is the edition of Windows and Service Pack level, Bob ?

2) Is the security software the same on both systems ?

3) If the Windows edition is XP, is KB951847 listed in Add/Remove
Programs [ARP]in Control Panel [the listing will start with Microsoft
..NET Framework] ?

4) Is KB967715 listed in ARP under Windows XP - Software Updates, all
the way at the bottom ?

My variation (on my XP system) on this issue is I've installed the kb967715
update twice but continue to receive the 'shield' in my tray. I was told on
another issue that it possibly indicates this is a corrupted component. If
this is true, what component is corrupted and what do I need to re-install to
correct the corruption. If it is something else, what do I do?

I have a similar problem with KB951847. It DL'd OK but failed to installed on
three seperate occasions. Had a similar issue with Killbits. was told to
delete a file, cannot remember which one. As KB951847 is not in my add/remove
file, which file do i need to delete in order to re-DL the update and
reinstall? OS Win XP SP3.

KB967715 is a "pig"
.. I have had it repeated to my PC many times and it just will not settle. If
you do the Start-Run-Gpedit.msc-Computer configuration-expand Administrative
Templates-and then click System. In the Settings pane right click Turn off
autoplay and then click Properties. Click Enabled and then select All drives
in the Turn off Autoplay box. Restart the computer. If this does not work,
then I really do not know where to go!!

My issue is with the KB967715 update per the blogs that indicate the update
keeps showing the update shield in the SysTray. According to the "Add and
Remove Programs" in the Control Panel, the update was accepted. However, the
update shield will not go away. I have tried all of the blog corrections:
(ie: deleting and re-installing, installing with authentication through the
MS website, downloading the file and then updating etc.). I doesn't seem to
matter. Microsoft, we need some help here...please.

Please post the URL to " the blogs that indicate the update keeps
showing the update shield in the SysTray. "
The most likely cause for KB967715 being reoffered, even if it shows in
Add/Remove Programs, is security software that guards the registry from
'unwanted' changes.
For those who are experiencing this reoffering issue, check the security
software installed and which one is *preventing* the setting of this
registry subkey.

Woody,

The most likely cause of this issue is security software that is
guarding the registry against 'unwanted' changes. Rather then delete ' a
file ', check to see what is the *guarding* the registry.

In my case I only run Spyware Blaster and my antivirus. Have disabled both
and the install still will not run.

With all of the different machines and all of the different softwares out
there what is the likely hood that this can be narrowed down to the same
piece of software on every machine involved.

I have yet to try it on my home built computer but I am almost guessing that
it is going to install just fine. It is my laptop that is causeing an issue.

I almost want to say that it could be related to the type licenses and the
way OOBE works on branded computers. Maybe there is something in the fact
that with those types of machines you do not have to reactivate when you
change too much hardware or reinstall from a factory image.

The above is just a thought so if anyone having this issue is running a non
branded machine that you built your self maybe you could chime in so one
more thought could be erased from the mix.

Spyware Blaster is installed here and it did not interfere with the
update's installation.
Which antivirus is installed and are you absolutely certain that none of
it's services and processes are loading ?
Suggest you check the registry to see if this subkey exists

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\policies\Explorer]
"HonorAutoRunSetting"=dword:00000001

Then check shell32.dll to find out it's Version number.
If this is XP SP2, check to see if shell32.dll is now at Version
6.0.2900.3402
If this is XP SP3, shell32.dll should be at Version
6.0.2900.5622

What you could try is creating a .reg file, Merging it, then Clean Boot
the system and attempt a manual installation of KB967715 -
The text to be copied is inside of the [============] lines :
================================================== ================================================== ===

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\policies\Explorer]
"HonorAutoRunSetting"=dword:00000001

================================================== ================================================== ===

Make sure Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 is at the *very top* of
the file to be saved.
Click File, Save As, name the file HonorAutoRun, click the drop down
arrow next to Save as Type and choose All Files, click the Save button.
*Right* click HonorAutoRun.reg and choose Merge.
You should get a message that information in the file has been
successfully into the registry.

Manually download KB967715 from here and *save* it after merging
HonorAutoRun.reg:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...e-e64ecfb35d74

*NOTE*: The update obtained from KB953252 [KB950582] is the *exact* same
update as KB967715 BUT the download page does NOT require a system to
pass Validation, as the one for KB967715 does:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Clean Boot XP: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353
After booting to the clean boot state, install KB967715 or, it's
predecessor, KB950582 [ the update obtained from the links on KB953252 ]

Did that get 'it' installed ?
