I do a lot of volunteer work at Ancestry.com and am unable to figure
out how to type the Scandinavian characters with my new laptop.
On my home pc I just had to hold the alt key and using the numbers pad ,
type 0228
etc to get the marks over the correct place. I am unable to use the sites in
Finland as I can't type the correct letters on my computer. Has anyone come
across
this problem and easily solved it?
Thank you,
Alicia

In XP, I use either the language bar to switch the keyboard to a
language that includes the "umlauts" (as in German, Swedish,
Norwegian, Danish) or the "circles" (Swedish, Norwegian, Danish),
or I use the Character Map to select the characters. At the
beginning of a long series of paragraphs, I just line these
characters up to be used for cuting-n-pasting. These features
are probably part of Vista, too.

Ha det så bra!

In Vista, the Character Map can be found in
Start | All Programs | Accessories | System tools,
and various language keyboard selections can be found in
Control Panel | Regional and Language Options. Use that
to set up a "language bar" (an icon next to the system tray)
that presents a selection of languages when you click on it.

I recommend that you consider using the little freeware background
program called AllChars. This lets me (in all applications) type many
common special characters (many of these are used in other languages)
by pressing the ctrl key followed by a two character mnemonic
combination.

For example, for ñ the two characters are ~ and n. For ç it's c and ,
For ü it's u and "

Go to http://allchars.zwolnet.com/
