Okay I just received a new laptop for Christmas with Vista already loaded
into it. The biggest frustration for me is when I am typing email or anything
in general the cursor moves all over the place but especially where the
pointer was last. I need to know if this is a computer glitch or a something
with Vista. This is extrememly aggravating! It took me four times of "moving"
the cursor back just to get this typed!

Yup - it is a pain and there is a simple explanation and a very easy
solution. What is happening is that while you are typing some part of your
hand is touching the touchpad sending the mouse all over the place.

Solution: Most laptops come with a function button/key e.g. a button marked
FN [or something similar]. They also have a button/key, usually near the
top, with a little icon on it that looks like a finger touching the touchpad
[or something similar]. While holding down the FN button, press the button
with the finger & touchpad icon. This will disable the touchpad, enabling
you to type without the mouse pointer being inadvertantly moved. You
re-enable the touchpad the same way as you disabled it. Very easy.

If you still cannot figure out how to dis-enable/enable the touch pad
consult the computer's manual / the manufacturer's website / or the
manufacturer's helpline.

'Hope this helps you,
Saucy

I am having the same problem!!! It is nice to know that it is not my
laptop--it isn' even a month old. It is so frustrating--I am a student
typing many papers...the jumping cursur adds to my frustration.

The best way to get rid of this problem is to learn to hold your thumbs so
that the base (or any other part) of each thumb doesn't go near the touch
pad. That's what's causing the cursor to jump around. Once you have
accomplished this, you will be fine. After all, generally all you use your
thumbs for when you are keyboarding is hitting the space key (and, on some
other keyboards like the "natural" that I use for my desktop, forward and
back buttons). I had the same problem when I got my first laptop, about a
decade ago, and it's stuck with me.

Yes, but .. lol .. I tried that but found just toggling the the on /off is
easier if there is any amount of typing to be done. I would hit the touchpad
even if I did hold my hands up .. after a few lines my hands would sort of
lower .. then the mouse would click in somewhere else and the typing would
get messed up.

If you can plug in a mouse, just toggle off the touchpad [when you know you
will be doing a lot of typing] then toggle it back on when you want to use
the touchpad. Most laptops have an easy way of doing this and it saves one
the frustration of a lot of typing errors.

For what it's worth, my old laptop had a setting that disabled the
touchpad when a key was pressed, and it would re-enable about three or
four seconds after the last key press. I don't think the delay was
configurable, but it worked well for me. I imagine most laptops would
have something similar as this is a very common problem.

Lots of times this has to do with touchpad sensitivity. This problem has
been mentioned on this forum many times.
