Parent has an XP Pro machine on Dial-up and I've been unable to get Windows
Updates since mid-November 2006. I just purchased a flash drive with U3
capability (haven't plugged it in yet, so I don't know how it works). Can I
somehow download the XP updates since December onto the flash drive on a
broadband connected computer and install them on the dial up machine via the
flash drive?

The most accurate way in this case would be to (on the dial-up machine)
visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and let it analyze your system.
It will come up with a list of patches and you write down the Knowledge Base
(KB) number for each patch needed. Then - you take that list to a machine
with broadband connectivity and visit the web page for each # in the
following way:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/######

(Replacing the ###### appropriately with the number of the KB article.)

Then - if asked - consider yourself an IT Professional and visit that page
for the download for the OS in question... Download the files and place
them on whatever external media necessary. Take them to the dial-up machine
and install them and run the http://windowsupdates.microsoft.com/ scan again
to see what else you might need.

Other option(s):

How to use the Windows Update Catalog
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/323166
(In order to use the Windows Update Catalog, you must use IE to get the
patches..)

Windows Update Catalog
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...en/default.asp
(In order to use the Windows Update Catalog, you must use IE to get the
patches..)

You can see the critical (security and other) patches released for a given
month using the following:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../ms##-***.mspx

At the end of this line you see "ms##-***.mspx" .. If you simply replace ##
with the two-digit year and the *** with the three character month
abbreviation, you will see the list of "critical" and "important" patches
for that month (since it only happens once a month usually, if you check by
the second Tuesday (wait until afternoon) of each month - you should be
fine) - note that future months will not work.

As an example...

December 2004's patches..
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../ms04-dec.mspx

March 2005's patches..
None released.. so that one will fail...

May 2006's patches..
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../ms06-may.mspx

February 2007's patches..
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../ms07-feb.mspx
