UBS 2.0 with unknown device

I have installed all of the XP Pro updates with SP-2 to ensure the proper
control of the USB 2.0 high speed usage with a new PCI combo Firewire 1394a
and USB card.

I have check all around the MS sites and with the Mgf. (VIA VT6307) for
assistance. VIA claims that it is only using MS' USB software driver
controls. The Firewire 1394a appears to work according to the Device
Manager. The USB Hub ports appear to work according to the Device Manager.

However, when I try to use an USB device(s) (two different units) MS will
pop a message that an USB is not reconized and click to check the port and
device. When I do this, the Device Manager window show that the USB Hub port
is Unknown. Unpluging the USB device and re-installing does not help.

Anyone know the specific MS XP update that controls USB 2.0 drivers. I can
not find a single specific update package. I have nearly all of the MS
updates, except IE 7.0 which should not have anything to do with the USB 2.0
drivers.

Any thoughts or help would be appreciated.

Hi;

Not aware of any XP specific updates that deal with USB. If this was an
OlderWindows-to-XP upgrade there may be some residual Registry entries that
specify a specific USB port to a specific device. Heavy emphasis on the
"may" part of that.

Have you tried the devices in a difference USB port? Do you have a mix of
1.1 and 2.0 USB ports on that computer? Is your USB controller on the
motherboard or is there an add-in card for USB 2.0?

One option might be to have the USB 2.0 device plugged in, then do a Repair
install of XP (forcing it to recognize the item/port in use). Beyond that,
not sure. You may want to post this in the XP Hardware newsgroup
(microsoft.public.windowsxp.hardware).

Thanks Sky King:
The firewire/USB combo card is a PCI card. Yes, I have the motherboard USB
1.1 and now the PCI combo card USB 2.0.

Yes, I have tried to force the MS to find new hardware and also driver
upgrades.
Neither result in "new installs or upgrades of drivers". I did find one
upgrade for the USB controller card.

One BIG issue/problem is with MS OS when you want to do a
download/upgrade...the auto "let's check your system for any needed
upgrades". Then it takes forever to get any response from the MS
Servers...if any. Its' worse than being put on HOLD on a telephone contact
or Going thru India's support services!

I'll keep trying to find a solution. I may try to disable the USB 1.1 and
then try the USB 2.0 as a solo access.

That is most likely the problem.

I suggest you clearly mark your 1.1 versus 2.0 ports. Then do a CleanUP, to
include Registry editing, of any old USB assignments.

With your configuration you can't just poke-n-plug. And since your 2.0
ports are from a card you will most likely have to install drivers (came
with the card) to get them to work.

You probably knew that since it clearly states that much in the USB card you
have. But you elected to blame MS instead. Tsk, Tsk.

Read the docs on the USB 2.0 card you have installed. Follow the
instructions.

MS does good things, but they are not "Miss Cleo" and can't read your mind.

Thanks again Sky King:
Your suggestion may work...the trick will be to disable the USB 1.1 without
disarming the onboard Intel 82371 AB/EB PCI to USB Host Controller.

About the VIA combo card...the Mfg. They insist that MS is the provider of
the USB 2.0 driver in their agreement with MS. Therefor no driver came with
the PCI card.

Yes I was blaming MS for the conflict issue...rightfully so. Sorry that you
needed to try and blame me or the Mgf.

I'll keep trying to fix the "unknown device" using my Updated MS XP SP-2
with USB 2.0 fixes/patches that are approved by MS.

I have the same problem like Dennis. I have 1.1 USB ports came with the
original Gateway computer and then I got USB 2.0 port hub card installed by
COMPUSA. It was working for awhile. But now I am getting unknown device
from XP SP2 installed and my up-to-date computer. I suspect that this
conflict happenned during the automatic XP Professional updates and yes I
blame MS for it as well. I don't know where those drivers are in their site.
The card did not come with driver update. I had no idea what CompUSa made
it work orignally. I would also apprecaie a solution to this problem..

I should give more info as well. The Compusa installed the 3 USB 2.0 port/3
firewire combo PCI card. Looks like exactly the same issue with Dennis is
experiencing happened to me. The only difference was this working for a
while.. U until a few months ago, It started not recognizing my camera and
USB Flash Drive.

I have checked now and the Dev. maager says unknown device from one of the 6
port of the USB Root Hub. When I click on it, it says the device type:
Universal Serial Bus contollers, Manufacturer: [Standard USB Host
Controller], Location0[USB Device] As a device status: i read "No drivers
are installed for this device " When I check the driver icon at the top, it
tells me Driver provider Microsoft , Driver date 7/1/2001 (clearly no USB 2.0
or SP2 was available then). The driver Version is 5.1.2600.0

yes the computer came with XP Pro with SP1 and later upgraded to SP2. I
don't know why it worked for awhile and now it stopped working. The only
explanation is the auto XP updates to me unless the card go bad. So, I am
very much interested how i can fix this without taking the computer back to
CompUsa if there is a way
