Ubuntu convert?

Well not entirely, but after reading this newsgroup for months, seeing
perhaps thousands of posts, wanting to move to Vista BUT checking to see
if M$ made a BETTER or WORSE operating system for my needs, CONCLUDED:

F-O-R-G-E-T V-I-S-T-A!

Even magazine review after review RANKS on Vista for more than one
reason. And OVER AND OVER advise is to stick with XP (which I like for
the most part). And OVER AND OVER people want Vista OFF their PC!!

What to do?
Downloaded Ubuntu 7.1 ISO. Ran fine on my notebook PC (IBM ThinkPad). In
fact I was shocked at how easily everything went! It set itself up, even
had immediate internet access. The package includes networking, email,
file manager, multiple desktops, etc., even a weather widget which is
very nice! Two clicks and you have a radar weather map for any area. You
also have access to a large software repository for downloading other
programs. Amazing!

Tried Linux many years ago but gave up when install kept hanging because
of various SCSI devices on an older PC, but the Ubuntu release is FAR
better. (you've come a l-o-n-g way baby)

Must also say, just to be 'fair', in my opinion ubuntu as nice as it is
(and it is NICE) is still not to the point where a typical PC user will
find satisfaction because I think a higher than average knowledge of
PC's most likely is required to really USE its potential.

Never-the-less, try the FREE bootable CD Ubuntu offers. It will NOT
install itself on your HDD nor fool with ANYTHING to mess up your
existing setup of Windows or whatever. I did that, and decided to
install it! http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

BTW: JFTR, I am not a Linux loony. The OS of choice here is, of all
things, Win98SE although I use XP a lot too, W2K4 occasionally. But in
searching for alternative OS's, NOT liking Micro$oft's direction nor
it's worldview, decided to see what the diligent Linux people have been
doing over the years. Found something I like!

WAKE UP Micro$oft, I not about to buy Vista and recommend to friends,
FORGET IT. You'd do MUCH better listening to what potential BUYERS want,
and not pursuing your own foolish ambitious goals!

Well, now that you are an Ubuntu convert, why stick around here with the
vista people? Maybe you should take Alias and Ray with you over to the
Ubuntu forums and help them out. With Open Sores software, they will need
all the help they can get. With the GUI about 7 years out of date, and the
functionality about 1/10 of Microsoft Office, you will be so busy, you won't
have any more time to put Vista, XP, or any other Microsoft product down.

Just FYI

I installed Ubuntu...have since deleted it.
It looks horrible, oh , and "wobble" is hard on the eyes.
It detects NO hardware...I had to edit more conf files..what a pain !
Then , after trying the "restricted" drivers for my graphics card...system
start misbehaving...try rebooting...I get the White Screen of Death.

So I reformat both HD's...to get rid of GRUB...
ReInstalled XP and Vista within an hour !
And...upon first boot...Vista looks awesome !
It detects modem...its driver works !
ubuntu...took learning how to edit and configure wvdial to get it to work...
Vista...first boot 1200x1600...aero enabled...looks great
ubuntu...first boot 600x800...and looks horrible.
Vista detects onboard sound and creative sound card...Problem Reports
directs you right to the links to download drivers.
ubuntu...got fed up before getting this stuff installed...

Either I got extemely unlucky with my ubuntu experience...or people aren't
giving out true details.
Maybe in the future, if I have years of free time, I'll try it again.
But it wasn't much different then using Suse 2 years ago.

And...it has much the same prompts as UAC...unless you terminal sudo.

I may stick it on a old computer...that would be ubuntu's niche.

I keep a couple of Linux distros handy. I have a Gentoo box in the corner
(server only, fully command line, no GUI installed) and Ubuntu dual boot on
here and currently dual booting XP with Fedora on another computer.

I ONLY keep Ubuntu and Fedora around because I have a few customers that
swear by them, so I have to be able to support them.

The point of this post is this, I have to agree about the screen savers,
they seem to be the coolest part of the Ubuntu experience.

So just because YOU don't have any problems with Ubuntu, you think that
other people don't have issues with Ubuntu?

Narrow minded Ubuntu user!!!! Should switch to a Windows solution.

It does not detect all of the same hardware that Vista detects.

You only surf the web (your porn site(s)), email and ng's.

Yeah right...snip the truth.

ubuntu is so far below the level of even XP...it reminded me of Win 3.1
ubuntu's file manager when viewing details was like DOSSHELL
It's free for a reason....and poor me paid $35 to get it with a book. : (
Maybe I can sell it on eBay.

Ya know, I don't buy an operating system I buy software programs. I have an
operating system to run the programs I buy. So why would I use an Operating
System like Ubuntu that won't run ANY of my existing software? I've been
running Vista for 6 months and my only complaint is IE7 locks up constantly
and that to me is not a Vista problem, I can always use FireFox or Mozilla
(just to lazy to and don't web browse that much anyway). XP? We have one
at work. Where is the backup program? I hear people complain how crappy
the Vista Backup is (which I've been using for 6 months with no problems
backing up to a DVD+RW every morning at 1am) but at least Vista has a
backup. But my biggest questions is if you don't like Vista, that's fine
but WHY ARE YOU HERE? Are you so insecure in your choice of O/S you need to
convince yourself your choice was right by trashing another O/S?
Personally I think Linux sucks but that is all the more reason for me to
waste NO TIME on any of their newsgroups touting Vista but then I guess some
people are so lonely that they will even insight arguments just to get
someone to talk to. Sad to be so lonely.
