I've been using Ubuntu for over a year and it's great! No activation, no
becoming "genuine", access to over 23,000 FREE programs. No need for an
anti virus program or software firewall if you have a router with a hard
firewall. It's much more stable than any flavor of Windows and much
easier to install. Not only that, when *anything* installed on your
computer or the operating system itself needs updating, it's updated
through a central source so you don't need to be looking everywhere for
updates for this and that. Linux friendly printers and scanners are
completely plug and play, no need to install drivers yourself. Best of
all, all this is FREE. The new version, 8.04 will be out in a few days
or hours! Get it at http://www.ubuntu.com/ If you have any questions,
feel free to email me.

Rather than relying one one or two individual's opinions in this group,
which is basically what you'll get, you might try searching out some Ubuntu
forums to get a better idea of issues that might be involved with it.

Just like these forums usually represent folks searching them out and
posting , because they have issues, I would think the Ubuntu forums would be
the same, you would probably get a better picture of the types of problems
folks are having with that OS.

Here, you will most likely get a couple folks praising Ubuntu, saying it is
the best thing since sliced bread and bashing Vista, or just the opposite,
folks praising Vista and bashing Ubuntu.

If you don't have the funds for a Windows OS, Ubuntu will get your computer
up and running.

There is a learning curve. If you are used to using Windows, quite a sharp
one..

The claim of '23000' programs available is true, BUT the average user would
only find maybe 5 of any use.

Some Windows programs will run under 'Wine'..

A decent graphics card is required to get anything but an incredibly dull
desktop look..

Drivers for some hardware are non-existent..

To get an idea of the difference between Ubuntu and Vista, watch this
but note that this an older version of Ubuntu and it's gotten better
since then:

Why don't you just download and burn the ISO to a cd and try it out
yourself? You can run it right off the CD without installing it to
evaluate.

Asking for opinions in a newsgroup is a waste of time and will cause
nothing but flame wars.

The only opinion that really matters is your own.

If you need help where to download the ISO or how to burn it to a CD
you may want to go over to the Ubuntu group(s) and inquire there. I am
sure there are many fine loyal Ubuntu users there that would be very
happy to assist you.

So you've downloaded, installed, and have evaluated the latest LTS
version of Ubuntu already?

Ubuntu 8.04 was just released this morning.

It would be like me reviewing Vista, based on only using XP.
