udate Downloaded but failed to install

Help

I have justin installed Windows Xp pro as a fresh install. I've istalled
several updates using Windows updater and had no problems. It got to the
piont of needing 11 security updates, after updater down loaded them it tried
to install but failed on each one. viewing the install history it gave the
error code 80070003. I used this and searched the forum and tried all
possibilities. Clearing folders checking to make sure folders were there and
correct paths. With and with out norton firewall & antivirus running. I am
loged on as administator. However i managed to install direct X 9 and media
player with no problem. I then down loaded services pack 2 and installed this
hoping it would solve all problems. This install went fine. Then ran update
same problem and error code.

I think a problem we have is that nobody knows what all "files and directories"
are implied by the above trace entries. So how can we know which ones to clear
or which ones to check? What I would do is run FileMon (as a guess filtering on all of
SoftwareDistribution, Update and CatRoot) to see if any file or directory permissions
problems show up that way. In any case it would also show you exactly which files
and directories were being accessed just before the error condition was detected.

Hint: FileMon is freeware from SysInternals. You can filter on more than one string
with it by using a semicolon ( as a separator.
