Try changing the jumper. Some computers only recognize Single option for the
external hard drives.

thank you.. I don't know what a "jumper" is.. I asked someone at work,
he said for an external HD you purchased separately (the case w/mine)
they don't have "jumpers"... (besides, Vista was reading these fine
right after I re-installed about three weeks ago... )

thank you..

maya - for solution/recommendations you must include all pertinent info such
as "... (besides, Vista was reading these fine right after I re-installed
about three weeks ago... )...." .
Above statement impacts on the following from your original post "... have
two external HD's.. Vista isn't reading either one of them when I connect
them to the machine...".

Some explanation of "...right after I re-installed ..." may assist in
receiving response.

I have a LaCie external hard drive with a Firewire 800 connection that works
just fine but I had to install a Firewire card to connect it to.

Perhaps you need some such thing?

I did a re-install of Vista about three weeks ago, that same evening I
connected the external drive to back up my data (since I hadn't been
able to do that before re-install, fortunately have two HD's built in
machine, so before doing the re-install I backed up data to 2nd drive in
machine....

last night tried again for the first time in about three weeks to
connect external drive, Vista wont read it... (again, on XP, at work,
no problems at all..)

thank you...

Maya,
How do the external drives connect, e.g., USB,Firewire, etc?

Have you checked in device manager (DevMgmt.msc) for any yellow or red icons
on the respective devices, interfaces?

Have you checked in device manager for your drivers being up-to-date?

do you get any messages or notifications?
a usb device was found or a usb device malfunctioned? anything?
in disk management, does the disk show, but needs you to make it active?
