Un- mounting a USB drive twice

I have a 8G USB stick that's formatted with NTFS file system. I always
need to use "Safely Remove Harware" *TWICE*, even when I had made sure
that no process was using the USB stick. The first "Safely Remove" would
always ended as error.

Why?

Um... your whole reply didn't explain why I needed to un-mount the USB
stick twice. If the default option is "optimized for quick removal", why
do I need to un-mount the USB stick twice?

And pardon me, I have another drive formatted as FAT32. I only need to
un-mount it once. What's special with the NTFS the journaling file system?

Have you seen how it appears in Device Manager? I have a SanDisk Cruzer U3
drive that appears as an NTFS volume, CD-Rom Drive as well as a U3 Device
(IIRC). It's possible that one of these devices needs to be disabled before
the other can.

None of this is a problem with ThinkPads, as they have a cool EasyEject (Fn
+ F9) action that gives you a menu to disable any custom groups of devices
with a single click.

ss.
