Unable to add contact with "_" in e-mail address

I am unable to add a contact that has an "_" in the e-mail address. Any
clues as to why that is?
When I "edit" the contacts properties, it says that "The instant messaging
address that you entered is not valid. Check the address and try again."

I was able to add one w/o the underscore. so I know it isn't my setup.
