I am currently unable to do a Windows Update. I normally carry it out
regularly. A message says that Windows has encountered an error etc and
needs to close. I can't copy and paste message either. I have tried both IE 6
and Mozilla Firefox with no success. Thx for your help.

Hi David,

Thnx for your reply. I have a legit copy of Windows xp pro so I don't think
that this site applies to me. You said that you HAVE the same problem...any
other ideas about fixing it? If not, should I re-post it or wait for further
help?

All the best,
Mike

"Mike",

We need a little more information to be helpful. You did tell us that you
have Windows XP. Which Service Pack? At what point do you hit the error?

A. Reaching the screen at the Windows Update website:
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com?
1. Do you see the screen or is it blank?
2. Does it offer to download the latest Windows Update software?
3. Does the website allow you to Scan for updates (either Custom or
Express)?
4. The website posts an error, such as 0x80072335.

B. You scan for updates
1. The scan just goes on forever and does not stop?
2. The scan results in a failure message, again of the format
0x80072EE2?
3. The scan results in updates that are available?

C. You have selected updates and are starting to install them
1. The update fails, with an error code?
2. The update fails, without an error code, and the screen is blank?
3. The update fails, but not sure because it is installing for hours?
4. Some updates succeeded but others did not?

Please let us know where in the process you hit the failure, and we'll do
our best to help.

Sincerely,

Pat Walters [MSFT]

Hi Pat,
Thanks for replying.
After a weekend away and re-booting machine twice, the problem has gone away.
Hope it stays away. Cheers,
Mike
